A couple of months ago I got a new computer, and I could install ubuntu on my old computer with no problems.

My new computer will not work. I forget the exact problem, but it was something with the xserver crashing during installation.

my system specs are (that I can think of off the top of my head):
Asus m3n78-vm motherboard
amd athlon 64 x2 5000+ cpu
4 GB of ram
ati radeon hd 3870 graphics card

if you need any more information, let me know, and I will try to find it.

I can run the live cd with no problems, but when I try to install it both with and without using safe graphics mode it will get so far, and then an error pops up that says the xserver has crashed several times in the last 6 minutes (or something like that).
I'm a linux noob, so I wanted to get ubuntu installed so that I could play around with it and learn linux better.
The weird thing is that I can install almost any other distro of linux, so far I have tried dream linux and opensuse, both installed perfectly.

Did you check the install cd for defects?, you might try that before anything else!

Choose that option when booting from the cd and see if that helps.

I can install it in a virtual machine using the cd
