I just joined the group and wanted to introduce myself. I'm a resident of Indianapolis and teach English at Noblesville High School. My Bachelor's and Master's degrees are from Indiana University - IUPUI. Two friends got me interested in Ubuntu when I was looking for a challenge to take up the spare minutes between grading and planning. Before this I was exclusively a Windows guy -- have been since 1985 when I bought my first PC. I was in the Air Force for 25 years and spent eight of those as an "additional duty" Unix system manager.
I'm very new to the OS and anything but a power user. I've got two computers using Wubi (one is my desktop at school -- the other at home) and two PCs at home exclusively Ubuntu. I just upgraded the two Wubi and one of the PCs to 9.04. On the other, I'm still running 8.10. The PCs are all P4 @2.8 or better with a minimum of 1 gig of Ram. (I keep one desktop Windows PC, and my laptop is Windows too (both XP)); the desktop has all my music on it (I need to get around to transferring to one of the Ubuntu boxes); the laptop is used primarily for scanning slides; I can't get the scanner to "talk" to Ubuntu. I would like to make some sort of contribution to the community. I'm not a programmer, so I can't help out there. I thought, though, that I might put my English background to work helping with documentation editing. If I start now to figure out the various parts of the puzzle, I'll be primed to go to work over the summer months.
If there is anyone who would like to mentor a new user or a budding editor, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I could also use some help on how to use irc; that's one thing I've never tackled.
Thanks in advance; I 'll look forward to meeting and working with you.
