Upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04

Hi,

I would like to upgrade my Ubuntu 8.10 installation to Ubuntu 9.04 but at the moment my computer cannot connect to the internet. I understand that one can use the alternate CD to do this when there is no internet connection but I am put off by the fact that the release notes say that it (apparently, unless I have misunderstood it) does not install the Gnome desktop.

Is this really the case and if so, is there any way around it? Also when clicking on "Download" I am not presented with a choice of whether to download the desktop .iso or the alternate CD .iso

I could take the computer to a friend's house and use his internet connection but the must be a way of upgrading without carting the computer around.

Any help would be appreciated

1) The alternate cd will install the GNOME desktop; however, the alternate cd does not use a GUI. The server install does not set up a desktop.

2) To install by using the alternate cd, read this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation). It is set up for Feisty Fawn, but the process is the same.

3) To download the alternate cd, click here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate).

I used the alternate cd and it did not work, also do not want to have to cart it around.
