So I was in class the other day and the professor was using the computer at the from to stream a realplayer video (onto a projector). As he fumbled through the site I heard someone behind me say

"Realplayer? Who uses that! Windows media is the standard!"

A pro-MS statement has never made me mad till that day.

Looks like they are starting a repository style system for Windows. You can already get all those programs at CNet so I don't buy the one stop shopping spin.

here is a summary of the google pack -->

Of course, you don't have to choose to install any particular component. Google's just giving you a menu, and ala carte is fine. Here's what's on the table:

* Adobe Reader 7
* Ad-Aware SE Personal
* GalleryPlayer HD Images
* Google Desktop
* Google Earth
* Google Pack Screensaver
* Google Picasa Photo Organizer/Editor
* Google Talk
* Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
* Google Video player
* Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar
* Norton AntiVirus 2005 Special Edition
* RealPlayer
* Trillian

Google says all of the programs were added because they are considered "best of class" and that no payments for inclusion were involved.

trillian is great, and i like that it is included in there. if only it ran natively in linux though. i refuse to deal with wine and **** like that like others have done to get it to work. im a paying customer of trillian pro and i guess i wont re-up my subscription when it comes around, but its still a great program

also, realplayer is possibly the last audio application i would ever use. while it is better than WMP on windows, i will only use it in linux if whatever file i have fails to work in every other available player. of course that statement really means nothing to this thread about a windows application package, i just think the program sucks.

suse 9.3 and suse 10.0 both had it as the default player, and i absolutely hated that since real player in linux is crap, so i switched the default as soon as i figured out how (i started on 9.3 so it was all new to me, didnt take long though)

With some minor tweaking Gaim and ClamWin anti-virus could have be added to that list (both of which I use).

All Gaim needs is the ability to use file transfers and all ClamWin needs is a way for a novice computer user to delete viruses other than setting it move viruses into a quarentine file and having to search for and delete the infected file yourself.

They should have included the GIMP and 7-Zip too.

I share your thoughts about Realplayer and am glad that Realplayer is not THE standard for that very reason.

The irony is that while Realplayer is one of the longer-standing pieces of free nagware in the Windows world, the official Linux version is not very annoying. I appreciate the small window size and fast load. It even starts faster than VLC...but who's comparing the two?

I would take Gaim over a native, Linux port of Trillian any day.

hmm.. interesting. Gaim is nice, but it took me a while to get used to... I never really could use it until I used linux. Windows Gaim isn't quite as nice... I had someone say to me that I'm gay and a ****** because I use linux... (and I'm thinking it's exactly the opposite).. I try to convince him otherwise. Then I tell him that he would suck with linux at first, and he's like I'd never try it because I'm not stupid and a *** like you...

idiots.

He is just not secure in his manhood. He probally secretly dreams about a love affair with Justin Timberlake and lashes out that everyone else is gay because he knows he likes men.

i agree with the comment of most of the above posters. i also prefer linux realplayer over the windows one by far. (anybody ever get this in windows: 'please wait while realplayer attempts to connect to the real network' even when you're offline!)

that being said, linux does need a full-featured video player (like amarok, but for video)
i wish vlc was heading in that direction because i really like it.

just my opinion.

cue exit. me heads out to buy some stock in google! :cool:

I am by no means a power video user, but mplayer has played everything that I've thrown at it in the past 3 months or so.

Nevertheless, I agree with you about the full-featured video player, but it is Ubuntu that needs it, not Linux. As a user-friendly distro, Ubuntu would be better off replacing Totem with something more featured.
