Sorry if this is a stupid question...still kind of new to Ubuntu.

8.10 was the first release of Ubuntu I ever used and a few weeks ago I had to reinstall the whole thing because it was not working correctly, and lost everything.

Will this upgrade effect my files? I really don't want to loose everything again and have to get everything back.

And if I stick with 8.10 how much longer will I get automatic update notifications?

Thanks.

Hi

I'm in same boat as you and hating to lose files. So far I'm now in Unbuntu Linux 9.04 after upgrading from "Software updates" I was reading in Linux Format magazine and saw "Back in time" that is backup of a whole Unbuntu linux with your files as well as a copy and can restore. Similiar way of OSX have Time Backup. Maybe I suggested to get an external hard drive and or secondary harddrive and use "Back in Time" to back up everything on it that way you won't worry when you want to upgrade to newer OS version of Unbuntu linux.
The website is http://www.le-web.org/back-in-time

Yes I was worried about losing files but I didn't. The tricky part was it asked me if I want to remove 35 files and I said no because that removing mbr that include Windows XP dual boot and other files as well. I'm not advanced expert on linux.

Hope this help! :-)

One thing you might want to look into is making regular backups of your important data and settings.
