I have tried with both distros to create a USB install using the usb-creator program included with Intrepid & Jaunty.
I had it working before on two computers & two sandisk drives. (A 4gb & a 8gb, I uninstalled the u3 system.) but re-purposed the drives, now I am trying to install jaunty again with the Persistence enabled. (with the slider set for all the available room.) both drives have over 2gb available for Persistence, but a 20k txt doc & a 5k sh script can't fit.
I can boot from the drives, checked for updates in the package & ran an md5sum on the iso. everything I have come up with is appearing fine.

I have used Ubuntu for over two years now, but I never really used the live USB option. I fiddled with it, didn't need it at the time & now I do.
any ideas to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
