 I've got a new prompt in my Ubuntu 8.10 Interpid Ibex's update manager. It says to upgrade to new 9.04.I've installed all updates of 8.10 so I can try to upgrade. My problem is related with data.I've stored thousands of eBooks, fifty songs and fifteen movies in my laptop. Will I lose all of them if I upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).Should I store them in external hard drive before upgrading to 9.04.
Thanks in advance to anybody who read my problem.

Generally speaking, you should backup important documents when attempting any major upgrade.

With that said, you should not lose your data when you upgrade.

Think about it another way. The lifetime of a hard disk can be as little as two years, while above five is going well. Your hard drive could fail tomorrow - really - its worth backing up.
