I am currently running 8.04, would like to upgrade to 9.04, but I know I'll have to upgrade to 8.10 first.

So, after a whole week of waiting for 8.10 to download I finally have it burned to a CD.

So please please please please PLEASE tell me there is a way to upgrade using this CD, as I can't see any obvious way to do it.

Thanks in advance.

unfortunately as far as i am aware there is no way to upgrade via the cd. If i am not mistaken the cd is used as a clean install method whereas the upgrade manager is the method to upgrade without a cd.

Now while the cd may lead to a clean install, you could actually save yourself a lot of effort and time with fixing settings, and what not by having your /home on a separate parition to your root.

See here maybe this is of use:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

http://www.sysresccd.org/System-tools - use this is you want to make a backup of your hard drive contents, so if things do go wrong you can restore and be right back where you are right not. Use the partimage function of the if I am not mistaken.

If I were you I would wait for someone with a bit more knowledge on the matter, but as I say as far as I am aware there is no way to upgrade by cd

I am actually looking for similar information.
I want to upgrade to 9 and so I need to upgrade to 8.10 and then to 9.

I have seen some detailed tutorial about how to network upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. But none of them is working for me.
The main step mentioned in all available tutorials is to select normal release in the update Sources>Update window so that update can find the normal release. I did that. Then while I am trying to update, 8.10 is not shown in update manager. I have done all the other updates shown by update manager.

I am not an expert. So, can anyone tell where is the problem?
