View Full Version : What kind of works do you guys do?

Derek Djons

I was curious what kind of work you guys / gals do. After four years working in a computer-shop as technical service employee, salesman and then as assistant-manager I got tired of pressure, windows and the place.

Now I'm working as a salesman at a local Apple-Centre selling at least something that's UNIX based. :) But that's also for maximum of two year in a planning. After that it's going to be back to study.

And you guys / girls ...

I'm a truck driver. I cannot work in IT as I have NO quals. I taught myself everything I know about computers. And I hate offices, and working alongside other people. So, I drive trucks, where I can pretty much run my day how I want to, and it pays better than an IT manager. (€30,000 per year!).

Ive always thought that would be cool... Living on the open road, nothing to hold you back (except the little black box tracking where you go).

Oh, and Bonzodog, it doesn't matter if your qualifications suck. I make ~$40,000 per yr, and I'm a 19 yr old, (with a pregnant wife, and 2 year old daughter) who dropped out of Highschool, and never went to college. I learned it all myself too, I just pick it up naturally. Sounds like you do too.

I'm studying at the University of Applied Sciences @ Seinäjoki, Finland, to become a culture producer, and I'm spesialising to Sosiocultural motivation with spezial intrest on different types of drama and theater methods, music and community arts.

Also, I'm studying at the University of Tampere some computer programming, but not that actively..

Next big challenge for me will be my 3 months practice.. I'll be going to Zambia to do some community theatre and drama with aids-orphans, and on my freetime I'll be teaching a course for some local Uni-students about linux/foss and webdevelopment.

I think that I'll be busy.. hehe.

I was an IT Manager for 4 years then recently crossed into the Telecommunications world.

Now I am a Business Consultant working for Vodafone NZ. This is an outbound role where I mainly deal with business connections.
Downside is that the majority of phones / dataphones (PDA/Phones) are not Linux friendly (except for the Palms). And also the fact that I have to use a laptop day to day running Win XP Pro, which feels like a backwards step coming from my Ubuntu Desktop PC. I change phones regularly so even if I did run Ubuntu on my work laptop and sync with a Palm it wouldn't last for long because I'd soon be changing to something that possibly wouldn’t work with Linux. Lately I am using a Blackberry PDA/Phone (which is awesome to use) and gladly it doesn’t run a windows mobile OS.
