I want to upgrade my Ubuntu 8.10 64bit to 9.04, because 8.10 cant connect to internet(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1134124) i think that this could solve the problem. But as i can connect to internet i cant install the updates in 8.10, so then i can install 9.04 from a alternate cd.
What happen if i upgrade without updating?, there is a way of updating offline?.
Thanks

You know, all a distribution upgrade really does is remove obsolete packages and install newer versions (and new software). I would imagine (though I've never done it) that you'd be fine upgrading without updating to the newest Intrepid packages first.

There is a way of downloading the updates(in my windows partition) and install without using the manager?

You can upgrade from the alternate cd:

I only saw the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/JauntyUpgrades to install the updates after I did the upgrade to Jaunty.

The Update Manager didn't insist that I install the updates first, so I didn't bother.

I was a little concerned, but am less concerned after seeing chrissharp123's response.

In any case I wanted to point out that my upgrade apparently went fine, except that the removal-of-obsolete-packages bit failed. I haven't managed to research that properly because I accidentally OKed the error message before I could copy it down.

I'll follow up on some of these points in separate threads.

So it would seem (from my actual experience) that you should be OK although one difference is that I have installed updates relatively recently whereas you have not installed any.

I don't know where else to ask this question, so I'll ask it here and we'll see if anyone addresses it - why doesn't the Update Manager insist on my installing all updates first? It could tell me there's a new distribution but not let me install it until there are no updates to install (giving me the option to bypass the insistence with -d if I really wanted)

Where can I suggest this? It seems to be a very obvious idea. Perhaps there's a reason why it wasn't done that way (such as, perhaps, that it's not strictly necessary?)

I apologise if this really belonged in a new thread as it's not really related to the original question.
