View Full Version : [ubuntu] 9.04 boot takes very long (60 sec)

I have a toshiba qosmio g30 (a laptop with 2g ram, duo core processor, and good graphics card). A fresh install of jaunty takes nearly a minute to boot, when on my much older desktop (512mb ram and celeron D processor) it only takes around 20 seconds. I had the same problem with intrepid too, but thought jaunty would resolve my problems. I read something in early releases about the wireless card slowing down the boot, but I'm not actually sure what the problem is. How can I boot faster? Any help would be appreciated.

It's probably also important to note that it hangs near the beginning of the loading bar for 40-50 seconds. No other part of the boot is slow.

are you using any windows wi-fi drivers? That used to slow my boot down.

I don't think so (unless they install be default). My wireless works with no extra installations needed. "Intel PRO/wireless 3945ABG" is my wireless card.

Hi,

I would suggest turning off the splash screen when booting and watching the boot process while it is happening. It sounds like something is failing after a time-out period.

An easy way to watch the boot process is to press Alt and F2 or one of the other F keys (can not remember which) when the boot splash screen comes up.

This should drop into a text display listing the boot functions taking place. This should give a clue to the problem.

You can also look through the boot messages by typing:

dmesg | more

In a terminal after boot. Scroll through and look for any errors.

Good luck,
Sygin

Wow, the dmesg output is long. I can post it if you need me to, but here's a boot chart:

I would be interested to get the messages between

[ 3.032519] and [ 59.100067]

Have you tried booting with the options:

noapic or acpi=noirq

Might be worth a shot, but I am no boot option guru.

I did also find a post: Jaunty : slow boot : sata hard drive "misclassified"

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7081837

If you are getting similar messages post back. I had to get a SATA DVD drive for my PC when I had similar issues with my IDE drive.

Cheers
Sygin

I would guess that the Tuner Card you have might have something to do with it. Does the TV Tuner card work?

It might be that a driver module is causing the delay while it tries to detect what TV Tuner you have.

It may be called something like cx18

Could you run the command:
lsmod

If you do see cx18 then I think blacklisting that module might solve the issue.

If you are still willing and lsmod lists cx18:

Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add the following line to the end of the file:

blacklist cx18

Doing this will stop your TV card working, assuming it does.

Cheers,
Sygin

PS: A listing from lsmod and lspci would be interesting.
And lsusb

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! Blacklisting cx18 worked like a charm! I don't really care if I can't use the tv tuner, since I only use it in vista anyway.

Cool, great that it worked.

I believe that the linuxtv.org guys are working on supporting that card, there may even be support for it in the next Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Sygin

I have this exact same slow boot problem as well, and I have a TV tuner. But I don't have that cx18 module. here is my lsmod, can someone help find what I need to blacklist? thanks a lot

Hi Ducheus,

Just had a look at your dmesg, it seems very weird, have you googled for your machine in connection with the word Ubuntu?

I would try booting with nothing in the pcmcia slots.

Could you post the entire dmesg from the start to [ 193.832869].

I will try to help, assuming that you still have the issue.

Cheers,
Sygin.
