I have my Live CD in the drive, and when I boot into Phoenix BIOS (with F2), it shows the CD drive as the first boot device. But when I exit BIOS, it restarts the computer and automatically boots to the old Ubuntu installation. Does anyone know why?

Thanks. :)

is there a quick key to select which device to boot on startup?
mine has f12 to select cd, usb, network, or hardrive.

you could disconnect the hard drive then boot with the cd, this will prove exactly what is booting.

you could let the old ubuntu boot then ask it what version it is?

There are no quick keys; F5 and F6 move items down and up, respectively.

I'm running a laptop, and I have no idea how to get into it.

Both the CD and the HDD hold the same version (8.10) of Ubuntu. And anyway, all my HDD data shows up where it belongs.

BTW, this is a DVD-RW in a DVD-R drive. When I first started on this journey, I tried to burn the disk in my drive, but that didn't work and it made bumping sounds for a while. I can see the ISO icon in Nautilus when I open the CD drive.
