I don't know why so many people get it on the day. It is just better to grab a beta iso a few days before. I did so and there have been barely any changes (because of feature freeze).

I (technically) performed a clean install.

It helps to have your / and /home directories on different partitions, basically you need to manually remove all the configuration files/directories from ~, then you need to run the installer, let it format the / partition but don't let it format the /home partition. You will get a clean install system and still keep all of your personal files.

It's a bit more work than really necessary, but it works, a lot better than the normal upgrade-and-keep-all-your-personal-files method, which will almost always break something.

I've been running the Beta for the past little while and it looks like I got my final few upgrades this morning. I'm glad I have the final release now but it kind of takes the fun out of new release day. :) I'll be doing fresh installs on both of my machines soon anyway. The torrent files are listed. I have been running since the beta, as far as I understand it, as I run the update-manager, it has been updating me to the 9.04 release version. I got over 300 megs of downloaded updates the other day, and the last thing I think it did was update Firefox. Now I am doing the alt-F2 update-manager -d thing with my notebook. It popped right up that a distribution upgrade was available. It stated it was the Release Candidate version,, but with my previous postive experiences upgrading the beta, I am unconcerned, as I am sure the RC probably is the final version, and if not will be after running update manager again later on tonight or tomorrow. The servers were getting hit pretty hard, so I downloaded the torrent from the link I gave you above. Note the file dates. The torrent file is the 4/23 version, at least for the standard .iso file 99% of the people download. I have a Dell Mini-9 Netbook with the 8.04LTS version that came with it from Dell. Has anyone done an upgrade to the UNR version, and wants to share their experiences? For netbook users, are you aware of the htp://www.ubuntumini.com website?

Nope, it means re-uploading what you've already downloaded to other people who are downloading the same torrent.

Downloading via BitTorrent at around 250kb/s with 36 mins left - which is pretty much the maximum my line will support.

Of course, I'm already on Jaunty (have been since February), but I'd love to do a clean install with ext4, and see how it handles others PCs in the house (especially an Ubuntu-hating laptop). I use this as a measure of how well hardware compatibility has improved since last time.

I will continue to seed as well. My DSL isn't the fastest out here in Amish country though, but at least we finally got it a couple of months ago. Before that I had to struggle with Hughes.net satellite!
I am back, after the reboot, everything working perfectly, turned the volume up was all I had to do! My home directory was untouched, Avant still works, as does Ubuntu Tweak, and Compiz Fusion settings for the pretty cube are unchanged. I really have to hand it to the Ubuntu team, this is the smoothest upgrade I have ever done with any version of Linux, and I have been playing with Linux for over 10 years now. Only regret is never learning how to program. I haven't had to compile a program from source in a long time now... I don't know if that is a good or bad thing though :)

Ooh, just realized I've used suspend about 6 times over the last few days and it hasn't stumbled yet. Afraid to use hibernate as it will probably break the trend, although I was pleased to see that working (with some occasional failures) a while back. Even had nice "waking up" information in usplash.

On one of my machines, I sometimes have to click the "check" button to get it to recognize that there are updates/upgrades available (an upgrade is in progress on that machine as I type). Beyond that I'm not sure what to suggest.

I'm going for a full install (once I'm done backing up all the /home files onto the server) because I keep adding different applications that I don't use anymore and don't want it hanging around.

Plus this clears up any leftover files from applications I've removed.

If I don't install too much crap in the next 6 months then maybe I'll be able to just do an upgrade next time around! ;)

My desktop, though, is running 7.10 and likewise has a boatload of crap but first I have to find out if the nVidia drivers are as screwed up as they are for 8.10 I've been testing (when I have any desktop effects turned on, OpenOffice does not display any text.. not in the dialog boxes, the menu or anything.. just text. Turn off effects and everything is fine.)

After looking through the very condensed options page for transmission, I'm guessing it uses encryption by default and you cannot turn it off.

As for the torrent file, just right click one of the links to the torrent file people have posted earlier and click "Save Link As..." That should give you the actual torrent file. :)

I've begun testing it on the other PCs around the house, here's my results so far (bear in mind this is from the live CD)...

Family Desktop (2003) - Intel P4 3.0 ghz, 512MB RAM, Radeon 9200 - The experience was good before, but because ATi now uses EXA rendering, it's very, very snappy indeed. Wired networking works out of the box, as expected. Everything else does, too. 5/5.

Old laptop 1 (2002) - AMD ~1.6ghz, 256MB RAM, unknown graphics - Amazingly responsive for a machine with such low RAM and from 2002. The wireless lights up but there are no networks visible. This is the only negative - but impressive nontheless. 4/5

3 PCs to go, but an impressive start! I'll post more later when I've tested them.

Downloading via BitTorrent at around 250kb/s with 36 mins left - which is pretty much the maximum my line will support.

Of course, I'm already on Jaunty (have been since February), but I'd love to do a clean install with ext4, and see how it handles others PCs in the house (especially an Ubuntu-hating laptop). I use this as a measure of how well hardware compatibility has improved since last time.

I would like to make a few comments that touch some queries made that I do not think have been answered.

After testing on several type of equipment - yes a clean install always performs better.

Several of the mainstream torrent sites are already carrying the "final" version of 9.04.

Be ware, the file size is 698.6... not 714.2.... for the i386 32bit. The 714.2 is the RC pre-release version.

The guide is intended for upgrading to Intrepid, but it should be able to use for upgrading to Jaunty (9.04).
Just follow the instructions carefully, and make sure that you change the release name.

I actually thought Id try updating for once, but now I know better.
First I started the upgrade from CDrom, which DL some additional stuff, when everything was done DL I closed Rhythmbox and a few other Apps and the Upgrade Windows vanished aswell (it dint even had a Button to close it, so I couldnt accidently click it) without any message, breaking some package-depencies along the way.

Now I fixed the depencies and wanted to upgrade via System-Upgrade... guess what its hanging for minutes and I cant even cancel it. If servers are loaded its one thing, but not responding to input or displaying anything is another.,,,

I downloaded both the Live and alternate CD's (64-bit) from torrents about 3 hours ago. I was getting blazing speeds. Each one averaged around 800kb/s and were hitting 1.5mb/s regularily. It took minutes to download.

I did this at work, I have my laptop with me and was connected to their network so I didn't seed them. I'm going to though when I get home. Share the love! :)

Wow this release is damn amazing, for the first time everything just works, unbelievable!

Boot speed is amazing, first time I seen my Trust tablet work without any fiddling. Compiz setting don't conflict with the other GUI configuration. This is definately the best linux experience I have ever seen, and I've tried pretty much all the other top distros.
I can't even believe i'm saying this but it's surpassed Winblows!

This is an amazing bit of history.

I had a few issues when upgrading with the betas and RC.
Since I always have a fresh backup image of 8.10, I restored that and tried the upgrade again with Final Release via the alternate disk.

Everything works.
TV, virtual machines, email, system monitors,
disk drives, Compiz. It all went off without a hitch.
This looks good.

For the last 4 releases, on the release day I ritually set aside disk space from my otherwise Arch and Debian - dominated HDD, and install Ubuntu, expecting, at the very least, a GNU/Linux nirvana and ascension to a higher plane of Free Software, at least based on what the regular users have to say about the betas and release candidates. According to the logs, it's been 137 days since the last time I've booted into 8.10 before today, when I booted into it again to upgrade. Equally unimpressed, I have a strong feeling that this post will be repeated on the day of the next release. The network manager is a joke, the default gnome theme still closely resembles the colour of vomit it induces, and my Arch install has been booting faster than this alleged "optimisation-oriented" release for years.

Suffice it to say, I've apparently placed my expectations for Jaunty way above the bar. Perhaps I should've spent less time reading fan forums and blogs and more time actually testing it.

Wow this release is great. Everything works out of the box(including my soundcard M-Audio 2496, which hasn't worked, out of the box since 7.10..... yay!!!) The ATI proprietry installer thingy didn't work, but the official driver installed like a charm! In fact unlike my recent Ubuntu experiences, I've been up and running in no time.... and I'm loving it! Well Done the Ubuntu Team!!!

The question is really about whether you want to switch to the new ext4 filesystem (that's the chief advantage I think) and whether you can do that while keeping your /home partition intact. I'm not sure if you can do that.

I don't think that would change your /home to ext4. I went for the reformat option off a Live CD install.

Yup, it's possible (http://www.camrdale.org/apt-p2p/) but I haven't tried it. And I don't think I will this time, since I'm not sure yet if I'll have hardware issues. But that's not yet my problem: right now, my .iso torrent won't start. Transmission says "Tracker hasn't responded yet. Retrying..." The port's open, I've used it before, and my ISP is not known to be evil. Any ideas?

How come I downloaded from the official source, burned into a DVD and when I did a fresh install it installed Ubuntu 8.10?

it would be tricky business because not everyone gets the same updates. what control system is in place to route what updates to who? i don't think it is as cut and dry as you make it seem.

If I do a clean install with a cd-r thats up to 48x the speed, is 700 mb and can burn in 80 mins..Would that be the best way to go through Brasero?

hey guys theres this really cool program i discovered today it's called unetbootin it allows you to make a bootable flash drive really easily from an iso. i definitely reccomend it over a cd much faster booting into live cd

obviously we see things different, and that's OK. i actually like installing OS's and configuring. and i might add, i'm damn good at it. i challenge anyone in the world (given the same computer as my opponent) to configure (as in drivers, codecs, tweaks) an ubuntu machine faster or more completely than me. i can do it in my sleep.

Not necessary. Boot from live cd. Insert usb drive. System->create-live-usb(or something like that).

yeah, i've been using unetbootin for a while now. it definitely rocks for the iso's that don't natively have a usb install function.

Actually, Ubuntu's PPA system is a nice way of addressing that. Users/Upstream devs with an particular interest in an app would form their own repos you can follow to the latest versions while keeping everything else the same.

This is especially the case with end user apps, even Debian Sid doesn't came has updated as some PPAs.

it's really simple just open brasero chose burn imagage and set the directory to where the iso is stored then chose preferences or something to that effect and chose the slowest speed and click burn it's really simple

It appears that I'll just wait till i get my cd..No the process isnt hard..I know its not..But in my downloads window with the "ubuntu 9.04 desktop iso..it still has about 2 hrs and 35 mins..lol

I now know why sometimes Its hard & frustrating to learn these things :) and Brasero failed after I selected "open with brasero" as johnsie suggested...It kept asking for I beleive a midsum check of the disk..

It's no drastic change but I knew what to expect.

Everything just seems to run more smoothly and a little more intuitively than before.

The biggest change I've noticed so far is in boot time and (for my asus laptop) the better integration of hotkeys for controlling monitor brightness as well as the new more detailed notification box.

Oh and I did an upgrade instead of a clean install

I am now seeding both Kubuntu and Ubuntu desktop x86 isos. There are now so many seeders, that it seems as if I am being kept out of the uploading!:)

Anyways, I'm also downloading/seeding the Ubuntu DVD, I have uploaded 1.1 GB and downloaded 750 MB. Here, this is my only Jaunty complaint so far, the "leachers" heavily outnumber the "seeders, " but that is only because it is a large file and not many have completed the download yet.

I plan to keep on seeding until at least tomorrow; depending on the Upload to Download ratio, I will plan to install Jaunty either tomorrow or Saturday. Luckily, I don't have school tomorrow. It's as though they planned a holiday just for Jaunty's release.:popcorn:

I think that it's fantastic.

It it the only version that upgrade -d worked with. Most things worked out of the box.

The only issues that I've found are:

Metacity lost window decorations (yes, Metacity). However enabling metacity compositing from gconf fixed that.

The only other thing is that the version of OpenOffice has a tendency to make the gnome panel disappear - it's there, it works to click on it... but it makes it invisible - I suspect that it is another metacity issue, but haven't done any bughunts about it yet.

It's understandable that at the very first boot up, it will be very dragging, but once I strip it down to wallpaper + rightclick menu, no panels, no nothing, minimal xfwm, kill all background (non-essential) programs...well, lets just hope for the best. :)

The new notification display is soooo annoying and there is the obvious Intel video regressions. I honestly don't feel like fixing or trying to fix the display issues so I might just reinstall 8.10. The installer seems buggy as well since it would crash on creating a vfat partition on this drive.

Honestly for me it feels like the Gutsy release all over again except wifi works out of the box this time. I didn't expect this release to bring significant changes to Ubuntu and I don't expect the next three releases to do the same either.

I love it so far, boot time is incredible, my Lenovo IdeaPad Y430 is averaging at about a 15 second boot time or less (I haven't actually used bootchart yet to get the exact number, but i'm sure it's a lot less than 15 seconds).

I for one love the new notification style, It integrates nicely with pidgin and everything else and doesn't look out of place like the old ones used to.

Overall, this is my favorite release so far.

Many incremantal improvements to the Gnome desktop have greatly enhanced my ubuntu experience.
* Middle mouse scroll in compact view

* Automatic installation of missing codecs

OMG!! AUDACITY WORKS!!!!

I have tried to do multi-track recording on several computers with dozens of distros, and NEVER have managed to get Audacity to work properly. It's all but reduced me to tears. Now it's working on Jaunty which I'm testing on a spare hard drive. I wasn't going to update to Jaunty, but this alone may be enough to push me over the line.

However, I've yet to install the restricted codecs. I won't be surprised if this kills it somehow. Wish me luck.

I'm still running 8.04 (Hardy) on my laptop; I'm probably going to install 9.04 on it soon. I've tested the Live CD on my laptop and everything is good except for one issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/275998). Except the microphone issue, it looks like it works better out-of-the-box than Ubuntu 8.10 on my XPS M1530. For previous Ubuntu releases I needed a fix to make the touchpad work, that's not necessary anymore with 9.04.

I want to install Jaunty so that I have the newest versions of OpenOffice, Stellarium, Java (especially Sun Java 6 update 13 is important to me, I run the 64-bit version and there's finally a 64-bit browser plug-in included) and other software.

On my Dell Mini 9 netbook I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook), which is now an official version besides the desktop and server versions of Ubuntu. :)

I like it a lot, it runs really well on my Mini 9 and the application launcher and other adaptations to make it more useable on a small screen are really good. And it boots really fast, 20 seconds from the GRUB menu to the login prompt!

In general, I'm really digging it.

The new Xorg is letting me run at full-speed with Compiz, which I've never been able to do before.
Boot time is fantasticically small.
The general presentation is much better than any release prior. Hardy and Intrepid's wallpapers were... pretty horrible, honestly. No more ugly dotted lines around buttons thanks to the new Murrine. The community themes are great. The GDM and notifications look fantastic (**** the haterz).

Finished configuring just then. Bootup is incredible with Jaunty and Ext4. Seriously, if you're going to use Jaunty, use Ext4. 9.04 is all about speed and the cutting edge (well, as cutting edge as a non-vanilla distro can be). Default wallpaper sucks. :P

Okay! It's installed now. The first thing I noticed was a slight increase in speed and decreased RAM usage. Right now I have Firefox 3.0.9 running, along with Synaptic (I'm installing Firefox 3.5b4pre), and my RAM usage is sitting at 279.6MB.

Then again, I haven't installed Emerald yet and I haven't configured Compiz fully. I'm guessing once that happens, RAM usage will increase to what I was seeing in Intrepid.

I do like the new notification system. I have only seen it once, but it is a lot nicer looking then the previous notification system. After I get things fully set up, I'm going to see if there is any themeability there.

What I don't like so far:
- The new splash screen
- The new GDM theme

I'm going to have to make some custom ones, I guess. Other than that, I haven't noticed any other problems.

Upgrade from Intrepid was without a hitch. Initial impression - great.

- Bullet fast (I'm using EXT4).

I'm using EXT4 and it is the fastest ever as well. Booting is very fast and opening apps is incredibly fast as well. For me, best release ever.

Upgraded from 8.10 and switched to ext4 and everything is running fine. Seems smoother than Intrepid. Major thing I've noticed is sound, I can now get more volume than I could before, no longer need to turn everything up full. My screen resolution seems better now as well, subpixel rendering works properly now and fonts look a lot clearer.

btw whatsup with the wall paper... i wanted an artistic jackalope on my desktop! herons artwork and ibex's was great! seems like their artists were busy programming! it shows :P


Finished configuring just then. Bootup is incredible with Jaunty and Ext4. Seriously, if you're going to use Jaunty, use Ext4. 9.04 is all about speed and the cutting edge (well, as cutting edge as a non-vanilla distro can be). Default wallpaper sucks. :P

Awaiting Karmic with high hopes. Watch out, OSX.

For me,
It seems to offer very little extra above the previous release.

Maybe that's a good sign that it's maturing.
However overall, it wasn't worth the effort in upgrading.
