Horizontal lines on the screen

I have just installed 8.04 but cannot login. I see some horizontal lines on top of my screen, I hear the welcome music and then I return to the login screen. I seem to have some graphics incompatibility problem. Can somebody help?

PS: I can login to genome failsafe.

Could you post the output of

lspci | grep VGA
in a terminal?
