Dell xps m1210 Media keys not working with vlc

Hi,
I just installed ubuntu 8.1 in dell xps m1210. My media keys(play, pause etc.) are not working with vlc player but they work with Totem movie player. I am absolutely new to lynux based systems. I would highly appreciate if anyone could help me.

this is an issue with vlc itself and is supposed to be fixed in the 1.0 release.
