I just installed Ubuntu on a HP Pavillion 705w with a Celeron D processor. The installation went off without a hitch, as far as I could tell. Rebooted. Login screen displays fine. When I try to log in it locks up every time. It will log in for a Failsafe Terminal session OK. I've tried replacing the video card, but that made no difference.

Any help for Newbuntie?

What kind of video card do you have? When your replaced it did you try a different kind of card?

The motherboard has a built-in video card. I also tried a Radeon 7000 64MB DDR and a Canopus Pure3D.

The computer can run Windows XP just fine, and until recently was running SuseLinux 9.3 Pro.

When it locks up what does it show on the screen?

When I log in, the screen goes to a blank light tan color and stops. The cursor is sometimes visible.
