Hi, I am at my wit's end with a problem that is forcing me to reboot my
machine every 4-5 days!
The suspects
(K)Ubuntu 8.04.2
Linux 2.6.24-24-generic
KDE 3.5.10
X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90
four screens:
(2) nVidia Quadro FX 1400, dual-head, proprietary "nvidia" driver, 169.12
(1) r128 driver
(1) I128 driver
The problem
After fresh reboot & login, all is well for about 4 days. All of a
sudden:
GUI suddenly becomes very sluggish (Xorg process nearly CPU-bound)
new windows appear without titlebar or handles
in existing windows, when changing focus, titlebar buttons get all fuzzy/noisy/pixelated (like video memory full of garbage) for a few seconds, then revert to normal
If I continue using the system, eventually it all grinds to a halt and crashes, and I have to reboot. But if I exit Firefox, Kmail, Pidgin, and Adobe Air (TweetDeck), the problem seems to go away, at least for a while. Often that buys me another day or two, but eventually the bad behavior returns and I have to reboot.
This problem appeared after I upgraded to 8.04, and has survived all the package updates in the the interim, and the update of the proprietary nVidia driver. Help!
Thanks,
Charlie
