As many of us know the newest release of Ubuntu comes out Thursday, but I was curious what time of the day on Thursday?

When will the 9.04 live CD's begin shipping? For example, if I put in to get a Live CD tonight, would I get 9.04, or would they still just ship 8.10?

Looks like orders for Jaunty are open now:

Thanks a lot. Out of curiosity, does it really take 10 weeks for the disk to arrive, or is that more of a "worst case scenario" wait?

It usually takes about 6 weeks for me but I usually angle for about 12 cds :-).

I remember when Intrepid came out. I too thought it would be midnight zulu time (UK) which would be around 7pm EST in the US. However, they didn't release it until the next morning :( I feel bad for the Brits and everyone else that has to wait until the afternoon to get it.

But maybe i'm wrong on this one. i know i'll be checking starting at 7/8pm EST.

I thank you for remembering us in all this! Ironically, Europe has more Linux users than America yet releases are timed by American time. So there's some kind of 'Make the masses wait!!!1'

It's cool - as long as it downloads (torrent) relatively fast. I remember downloading Intrepid took about 4 hours... by the time i installed it etc a day later. Sucks!

If you wanted to be cheeky, i suppose you could download the most up-to-date daily build.. but where's the fun in that!

That is not so bad, think of all of the Linux fans in New Zealand...we have to wait for ages before it is released. It is 10:00 23 April here and official US EST is 18:00 22 April, so if they release it at midnight EST then it is only 6 hours away.....however if they wait till the afternoon......well that is tomorrow morning sometime.

I don't think I've noticed any standard time that they do, I think it depends on when they actually get things uploaded and torrents created, etc and when they are ready they put the info live for download.

nwadams
April 22nd, 2009, 11:46 PM
so if you know where to look you might be able to get a torrent download a few hours before the official info is posted on the website.

chances are the locations are probably hidden on a server somewhere that even if you knew the location, would not be showing anything due to being hidden.

I still have 7.10 on my wifes laptop and Im overly excited about 9.04. They just ended support on 7.10, so this will be my own christmas early. I love how they improved Broadcom support on 8.10 and with each release this just get sooo much better. Anyone got a twitter account that they can message from to announce when the torrent goes live? It would be a big help to the whole community!

Damn, still not out and it's officially Thursday 23rd of April 2009 12:14 AM.

Well, here in Australia it's actually 3:14 PM.

I cant wait to install Jaunty on my brand new netbook -- it's useless to me with windows on.

Yeah really...why bother with the cd when u can download it in a couple hours max instead of waiting for weeks. (Even on dial up it would be downloaded in a few days ;) )<--an unfortunate personal experience of long ago downloading the full microsoft office on dial up LOL :p

Believe it or not, my Ubuntu Intrepid install crashed yesterday evening (I had installed it using the Wubi installed, and it fubared the NTFS root disk somehow - I know, I know... I shouldn't have had it on the Wubi install, but the Mrs. needed her Win fix, so I didn't have a choice!). I figured this was an act of fate, trying to tell me to clean up the whole thing and install Jaunty. Now, if only they'd put it up already, so I can download it and get back to work!

Nothing yet - it's 1145 India Standard Time ( =0610 GMT, =0210 EST)...

no, that directory contains daily iso images. It is not the same as the master. It is really close though, however if people use that link tomorrow e.g. they might get a rebuild of Koala - provided the repos open right after the release is done and iso images builds start - normally that doesn't happen right away though.

You could download that and then use the torrent when release happens to check the iso and fetch any changes. That way you would get the iso really quickly at least.

Well, 9.04 might not be out, but if anyone else got those recent Firefox updates, I'm already noticing an obvious difference in the speed and smoothness of my browser. Doesn't seem to fidget at all when starting up, too.
