Hello!

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) will be released on April 23rd, 2009 [1]. Do you want to be the first one to test it? Do you want to see how many users have downloaded it and what bandwidth was used?

Taking chance of (K)Ubuntu 9.04 release, at the Computer Science Department, Politehnica University of Bucharest, a BitTorrent based distribution system was created. You will have the access to:

* 8 initial seeders for the distribution of (K)Ubuntu Live CD / Live DVD images. Later on you will have the whole swarm to download from...
* high bandwidth (1Gbps seeder local connection, 10Gbps Internet access connection)
* real time statistics of the swarm status (average download/upload speed graphics, number of seeders and leechers, etc)

Did you knew that BitTorrent is the protocol with the biggest popularity growth in the last two years [2] ? An important percentage of the Internet Traffic (about 30-35%) is BitTorrent traffic [3].

The .torrent files will be available at http://torrent.cs.pub.ro immediately after the official release [1]. We will copy the Live CD and Live DVD ISO images and will seed them. At http://torrent.cs.pub.ro you will also find the live swarm status statistics.

Take part at the experiment! Download (K)Ubuntu and get in the swarm !

The results of this experiment will be used in the P2P-Next project [4], whose target is to create an infrastructure for fast content delivery using the peer-to-peer model. Politehnica University of Bucharest is a partner in P2P-Next.

All the 8 seeders will remain active for two weeks after the release. One seeder will be available after that as well. Considering the experiment results satisfactory, the system will be used to deliver other images and large files for the open-source community. The system could be upgraded to a permanent seeder.

On a related note, I was surprised by the number of people downloading the RC through the official torrent. The official servers were getting hammered and the torrent download was giving me twice as much speed. Hooray for torrents.

I was always curious why torrents didn't catch on mainstream. I'm talking things like video game download sites, sourceforge, music download sites, etc. I had heard of some movie download sites trying to set up a private tracker for downloads but never came across one. Bit torrents are clearly the future of internet downloading. Server capabilities will continue to improve but at what cost? It makes more sense to just set up a torrent or a private tracker.

The majority of things torrented are illegal. Some goverments/companies would like to ban it's use, which makes no sense...

It is great to torrent and not have all the load in one place.
