Minimal Server X for VMware Server 1.x

Hi all,
which packages could you suggest to install a minimal X-server which could run
VMWare Console (to connect on localhost) and virtual machine through GDM? (ex. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202166)

Here there's the config I will work on:

VMWare Server 1.0.0.9
Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS
