I'm a programmer (VB6 / .Net / Oracle / SQL Server / Crystal blah blah ad infinitum). Not really a description of "the sort of person I am" though.
I fell in love with PC's (they were weird computers that lived in Newcastle university back then which we dialled via some strange wooden box on the wall) in about 1976.
In 1978 the Careers Officer told me there was no future in computers (bet he didn't last long in his job!). I moved to Linux because I am sick of using M$ all flaming day at work. XP is best M$ OS but is insecure and slows everything down. Linux has Penguins - no contest eh?!!
I use PC for messing around at programming, bit of web stuff, booking holidays etc (I shudder when my daughter uses my card to buy things via XP!!! EEEKS!!). I don't do hard-core programming / geek stuff these days. Too old, too tired and too scared of my wife!! LOL!!

On the side I do computer consulting.

Yeah, I've noticed that IT tends to give raises and promotions via new jobs, rather than promote-in-place. I work in the public sector, under a union that isn't focused on one specialty (not IT-centric), and it's set up for 30 year careers within the same umbrella organization. Since I'm about to hit the 5 year mark, I'll have to decide soon if I want to hop to private sector, before its too late. if i stay, i have long term security, but limited potentials. if I go, I can earn more (but with reduced benefits) and theoretically exceed the max I can earn where I am, but i can expect times without work, and feirce competition when economic indicators are down.

the problem with IT, is that the lawyers and MBAs (and HR) think we make too much, and always look to IT when cuts need be made.
