View Full Version : [kubuntu] from ubuntu 8.10 to kubuntu 9.04
April 21st, 2009, 06:20 AM
so i have this gut feeling to go from ubuntu 8.10 to kubuntu 9.04, i'm gonna be hard headed and say that making an argument to stay with gnome over kde isn't going to satisfy my urge to shift so should i just reformat over ubuntu 8.10 with kubuntu 9.04 or is there an easier way to upgrade, cause i've noticed there is some stuff i can't get rid of on ubuntu because of it's ties to gnome

i use to run ubuntu and kubuntu together with selecting the kde manager instead of gnome and just dist-upgraded it but installed kubuntu with apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

to experience kubuntu in it's fullness their can be no ties.
there is a whole new way of doing things as far as setting up user preferences, themes etc...

i hear that KDE has alot more user configuration settings available than gnome but i'm still stuck in the windows mindset (changing backgrounds and window colors) what can i really accomplish with KDE? i once saw a cube display of someone's desktop panels, how can i do that?

okay fine you win, kubuntu 9.04, should i do a clean install or is it at all possible to just upgrade from ubuntu 8.10, i don't really feel like reconfiguring everything i've done so far (trust me for me it was ALOT, WoW took forever)

i can't really suggest anything, something inside you must make you feel like configuring stuff ?

i like control of my system, i don't mind configuring, but it bothers me to no end to have to reconfigure things

i understand :)
when 9.04 is released simply upgrade, when that's done you can install kubuntu desktop.
you will be able to switch desktops at login screen under sessions.

remember kwin-style-crystal, search for that in package manager.
as for themes, you can select custom themes for windows or apply pre installed themes, i use http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/duanester/DarkPlastic2.png
that's the image that gives me the dark gloss window bar, of course you can do and use as you wish :)

Thank you for the help in deciding Inobe, i think a fresh install of kubuntu 9.04 over ubuntu 8.10 would be best so as to eliminate any residual and anything thing that i have to reconfigure will just re-enforce what i've already learned using these OS, so it's a total Win-Win
