I am running an ATI HD 4550 DDR3 512mb video card, AMD Triple Core Processor 2.8Ghz, and 4Gigs of RAM. I have Ubuntu 8.1 and the only problem i'm having is that if i enable advanced desktop effects video performance gets choppy, if its off the playback smooth. This is running Compiz.

Has anyone found a way to run advanced desktop effects without compromising the video quality? i searched for threads on choppy playback and i havent been able to find an answer. Thanks for the help.

Use the 9.3 Catalyst driver.

I have installed 9.4 but i still get the same problem. is it because i'm running on the proprietary driver? how do i switch to 9.4?

Exact same problem here, with the 9.4 drivers under Jaunty.

Depending on your video card, specs, and other factors, you may see the performance loss.

1)Give me your system specs. Including your video-card.

2)Performance will always decrease while using Compiz. It comsumes system-resources, slowing down your system in general.

3) Are you running Jaunty?

EDIT: LeHomard, there's a bug in Jaunty that slows down Intel video cards, should you have one. If that's the case, I suggest you look up at some of the fixes available http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904
