1080p external monitor attached to dell 1420n will not display 1920x1080

I bought an hd lcd, native resolution is 1920x1080, but my dell inspiron 1420n does not seem to support that high of a resolution for an external monitor (it offers 1280x720, and a few others though)

do I have any options? is this a limitation imposed by the intel gma video chipset or is this something else?

that would be a intel grafics limitation, you may be able to force the resolution editing xorg.conf but there is no guarantees.
