I installed 8.10 by CD (over an old installation) and after I login it goes to the orange screen and doesnt do anything else, all I can see is the mouse pointer.

How long are you waiting after you see your mouse pointer? Sometimes it can take several minutes.

I waited a while, and there was no hard drive activity

I have the same problem. Clean install, not upgrade since the upgrade completely messed up my computer. The graphics were a mess and everything froze before the login. New install, and things worked great for awhile, even rebooting, then this happened. ctrl+alt+F1 works, and the usb-memory stick shows up on my desktop but no menus. I tried a couple of things from here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1062626 but nothing works. I also have really huge letters in my login"boxes", ie the screen looks normal but the letters are so big it's impossible to tell what I've written. Forgive a complete beginner but are the issues related somehow? Graphics problem? I tried completely removing compiz (no dice) (replaced now, btw) and downgrading xserver according to this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/326344, still doesn't work.
I always disable all visual effects. (system/preferences/appearance) Help?

Edit: Reinstalled, everything works now.
