It just occured to me that X must not be the only one out there in this large world of open source. Is there another window system or something like it for linux or unix-like systems? Perhaps it may have been known by few but, this concept intrigued me. Discuss.

There are quite a few alternatives, but they aren't widely used for a reason.

Its not unreasonable to suggest that developing a new windowing system is akin to developing a different kernel. Gnome, KDE, XFCE and so forth are all built on Xorg.

Linux applications are built on them so really you're asking to pull the rug from underneath all those efforts and have to start from scratch with application support.

Besides, Xorg works.

Frankly, Tarantella is the only one I've worked a lot with and I'm not a big fan but in fairness that's mainly because the application it hosted was to human computer interaction what toffee is to good oral hygiene.
