I would like to perform a fresh install of a newer release... I don't really think the versions matter (although correct me if I am wrong) but I love my desktop, my icons, my tool bars, shortcuts, (and shortcuts on Firefox 3x) etc.

Where are the configurations for these items buried?

What I would like to do is save these items to a second partition, perform the fresh install, then recover my desktop, toolbars, etc.

Is this possible?

Thanks :D

It's possible, yes. I would copy everything in your home folder to an external drive, perform the installation, then just dump your home folder back into place. That should take care of pretty much everything, although you may have to import some settings into Firefox by hand.
