Hi,

I am trying to convert my old PC (Packard Bell year 2000 PII celeron 500MHz 128MB) to Linux. Xubuntu 8.04 seems adequate. However the alternate installation failed a few times at different moments or with different symptoms, and having experienced a few times some CD reader I/O errors, my conclusion is that my CD reader isn't reliable enough to get through a complete alternate installation.

Is there any other ways I could install Xubuntu without having to read too many MBs/files from my old CD reader ?

Additional info:
- Memtest OK, HDD surface scan OK
- My bios does not support booting from USB
- My AMI bios can't be updated since the AMI website tells me the ID number isn't from AMI, and Packard Bell doesn't provide any update
- My bios provides the option to boot from network (it doesn't mention PXE though)

Thank you.

You could try Unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) which allows you to do a frugal install (boot from the hard drive)
