I installed Ubuntu on extenal partition and it initially worked on dual boot windows xp system. But I had problem with windows xp and had to reinstall it and that is when problems started.
I have ubuntu installed in ext partition and somehow I can not access it. then I installed ubuntu within the windows xp and that works without any problems.

My question is how do I access ubuntu installed in the external partition.
any help will be appreciated

Do you want to get rid of Ubuntu on the external partition and just use Ubuntu installed in windows, or the other way round?

You should be able to retore Grub so that you can boot into windows or ubuntu here:

I would rather use external partition and get rid of ubuntu in windows.

Check post 3 out on this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1116206) (only do the reinstalling grub part (part 2)). You might need gParted (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=271779). Just download the iso and burn it to a CD.

Hope it works
