Hi I'm new to forum and Linux I installed Ubuntu 8.10 with a problem install of windows xp. It will not boot from hard drive. So it opens to a ton of i/o errors then boots up. I wanted to install it over xp.
Thanks,
Terrance

I'm not the same guy that began the thread but I got a question in the same vein.

My windows installation completely messed up (it just closed) and I'm currently downloading ubuntu and I want to know some things...
1.- Is it possible to install ubuntu without formatting the hard drive? I've got some important stuff there.
2.- Can I access another partition -different from where Ubuntu is installed-? I mean, the /root is going to be in the upper level as far as I know so I wonder if I can access the other partition (Wow, I think I didn't make myself clear there).

Thanks, I really wanted to download Ubuntu some time ago but I had too much stuff in my HDD that I didn't want to lose everything so the answer of the 1st question is going to be essential in this case.

Both of your questions can be found in https://help.ubuntu.com/community .
Browse around there.

Near the bottom of the link above you will find the index page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TitleIndex .

You will have to do some home work but that will be far better in the long run.

Please read any sticky notes in any forum topic area also.

Okay experts we have to boot from cd am I missing things I could be doing like multiple user login? We click on add user and it says name dose not exsist. I do want to boot from hard drive just thinking it is limiting some of the functions.

Nothing is permanent unless you install.

You must have the CD still in the drive and the computer is set to boot from CD in the BIOS. Remove the CD and reboot.

The install process usually says to remove the CD......

I'm wondering how the first poster installed it: in its own partition or via Wubi. If Windows is messed up then there's a small chance a Wubi install won't work so well.

Thanks!!! For all your help we figured out late last night after we upgraded to 9.04. We really are enjoying this os. The one problem we have left is open tar.gz and other files.

Thanks!,
Terrance
