Installing Ubuntu on a Netbook (MSI Wind U100-641US)

Hi All,

I am looking into a really cheap Netbook. Particularly, the MSI Wind U100-641US. (Specs: http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0304016)

However, these do not come with a disc drive. I have a thumb drive. I do not want to purchase a USB disc drive. I never use discs anymore. And I am cheap.

My questions are:
Has anyone ran Ubutnu on this particular machine before?
Can I create a bootable usb thumbdrive with the ubuntu install on it?

You sure can with no problem! Very easy. Do you have ubuntu installed on your desktop PC now?

Not right now. I want to switch to a fully unix-like operating system.

I was very close to purchasing a mac but I have settled against it. Although, I would like being able to run MS Office: I still need it. Wine seems somewhat rickety to me.

In any event, I found a video on youtube of someone who has done it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odLQhm-WJ-A&feature=related).

I guess my major concern was being able to boot from a USB thumbdrive.

Sure the MSI can boot from a thumb drive. I have it. Just download the Ubuntu ISO and use a windows program to make it bootable on the thumb drive.

I have an MSI Wind U100. It is easy to install it. I would recommend getting Ubuntu Netbook Remix Jaunty Jackalope which is the release that came before Karmic Koala. This particular computer has issues with Karmic but Jaunty has almost no problems except that there are some issues with connecting to the Internet. But other than that, it works fine on mine (I'm pulling my hair out on how to get Internet back though)

If you do get the same problem with networking but manage to fix it, please tell me! (I just GOTTA know)
