What's the difference between Ubuntu, running KDE... and Kubuntu?

And by the same token, what about Ubuntu running xfce(sp?)

Nothing really Kubuntu just comes with those KDE packages installed by default.

Kbuntu is Ubuntu but with the KDE environment instead of Gnome. Same thing with Xbuntu, its just a different GUI and default packages but the base of the OS is the same.

There is not a lot of difference between every single flavour of *buntus. The main point is the desktop environment.

If one installs kubuntu-desktop or xubuntu-desktop, there shouldn't be much difference at all. Maybe the upstart theme.

Yes, indeed. Bootsplash. But the best thing to do is to download the flavour you want to use since the beginning ;)

This is probably more information than you want:

and

And on the lighter side: http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7296/1.html

And that's just between Gnome and KDE. Don't get me started on Xfce...

I've noticed that different desktops (window managers?) come with difference applications. Can you mix and match programs (like office apps) using the software package managers?

Ie, can you install "K" apps into GNOME?

Yes, you can. I use a select few KDE apps in my Gnome DE. K3b being one of them.

sure, you can. either KDE, gnome or Xfce can install the libraries of other desktop environments and thus running applications that are native in different DE. If for example you install Kubuntu and then decide to use gnucash (gnome native) system will automatically install all gnome libraries needed to run gnucash.

Of course you can also install all three (or more) environmnets if you want to run different environment for each session...

I like Amarok, which is a KDE app.
