I'm planning to buy an external hard drive that will be used by both windows and Ubuntu/Linux Mint. Here are the choices that I am looking at:

Western Digital My Book Studio 1TB 3.5" USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / IEEE 1394b / eSATA and Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme 1TB USB2.0/eSata/etc.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks much.

I've repaired a few of these, they seem to be prone to the USB connector's seperating insulator cracking and coming out with the lead.

Thanks for the info,

Do you know any reliable usb/esata external 1tb drives?

Not really, the drives in WD are fine. I'm not sure on the price yet on 1Tb drives - I've a little iOmega 250Gb that I carry around and a Synology DJ106e NAS which was worth the money, even if I needed to buy a drive for it.

Depends what your plan is, if its for streaming media I'd do some digging on transfer speeds on different models. If its for backup, I'd look at NAS with redundancy.
