(Questions first, so you can ignore the "me! me!" babble.)
Starting over with KDE 4 at last. Upgraded from Heron so I've got a bunch of leftover settings and packages from KDE 3.5.10.
*1* How do I configure the Device Notifier applet? (Plasmoid?) It says "Open with Dolphin" even when it actually opens with Konqueror (that having been the "topmost" file type association for folders, I suppose). And the only media player I'm ever offered is Dragon Player. Fine, I don't hate Dragon Player or anything, but I want more choice, more control. And more kaffeine.
*2* Is there any way to space icons more generously (wider) in the Folder View? Or use a "details" view, while we're at it? I'm REALLY more interested in file names than icons, and long file names tend to end in "...". Spreading them out over 4-5 lines is ugly.
*3* Speaking of the desktop, Can I still control what desktop mouse button clicks do? I used to set it up so I could click on any free desktop pixel to get the K-menu (middle click) or window list (right click)... which was pretty darn convenient.
*4* Style of KDE 3 apps! The network manager is KDE 3. That normal? Also, with KDE 4 desktop effects enabled, KDE 3 menus/stuff are casting two shadows: A non-compositing KDE 3 shadow, and KDE 4's fancier shadow. I wanna turn the built-in KDE 3 effects off, and set the KDE 3 style to, dunno, Domino. But above all I want to turn off the KDE 3 shadow.
*5* Desktop effects! Is a CPU usage wobbling around the 5%/12% mark (core 0/1) with frequent spikes (70-99%) normal with KDE desktop effects enabled and not much going on besides? (dozen flash-and-java-less browser tabs, Amarok playing)
*6* THE NEW MENU! Can I get it to care about application names more than descriptions? It doesn't sort by name, only by description... and since the name's just a subtitle, I have to squint a bit to see if "Package Manager" is Adept, Synaptic, gnome-app-install... (for example). Also, can I stop it from blinking out of existence as soon as my mouse leaves the premises, or even before it ever reaches the menu itself, thanks to the default empty space strip between it and the K menu button? Clearly this was designed for the click-to-focus crowd only!
