Systems hangs after login window

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 yesterday. Did the reboot twice and it worked.
But today the system hangs after th elogin window.

What could be the problem.

Are you on a laptop or desktop?

My laptop continues to have this issue. It will Kernel panic, show the caplock light and freeze the system. This all happened after a major update.
I have to shut off my wifi before booting... turns out many people are having this issue with 8.10. It worked perfectly before the update...

A kernel panic is normally much earlier in the boot process than 'just after login'.
Do you see anything on your screen when the systems hangs?
Or are you able to switch to a terminal? (ctrl+alt+f2 or f3, and f7 to get back to the gui).
