I am having to deploy a new SAN at work next month I am curious as to what others think and have found to be their preferred raid level.

Just to clarify I do understand that neither raid 0 or raid 2 provide any data protection.

Raid 0 isn't data protection. I use one for /boot and zero for everything else, but I think five is the best. I only have two drives though.

Raid 10 is best, but raid 1 is a good compromise when you don't have four drives laying around.

I use WD Caviar Black drives on the Drobo, which is RAID 5 like, but technically it's own thing, so I put RAID 5 in the poll.

Get a SSD.

The server configurations sit on raid 5. The san gets backed up to tape with full backups sent off site and differentials on site.
