Crikey Keith, that was quick and I put it in the wrong forum too! I have moved my question to the general help forum where I had intended it to go. Ok, I know who I am but how do I find out my group?

If you haven't changed it, it's the same as your username.

You can use the id command to verify it.

The REAL question here is, how this manages to happen in Ubuntu sometimes seemly unexplicibly.

I have seen this happen in Ubuntu before and it is VERY annoying. It appears to me that there is still some exotic bug in Ubuntu that is yet to be fully discovered and fixed !!!

Thanks.

Thanks for your comment Shooter, I didn't realize it was an old problem, I just hope it doesn't happen again next time I try to back up. I figured it would be easiest to simply format the HD in Windows so that's what I've done.

Update: It worked ok, I have backed up safely and with no problems at all. Thanks to all.
