So one of my friends had mentioned to me that there was talk of a steam linux client (non-server related) Is there any solid proof to this? I crawled google for awhile this morning and only found here say, and speculation (even an article titled "Steam Linux Client Confirmed" didn't have anything solid) So I am lead to believe this is just more internet lies... anyone found anything different? Steam currently runs well through wine, but I would love to see the performance increase I would get from having Source engine a native application.

Nothing solid, so no.

The rumor is based on a listing on the Valve website for a Linux programmer.

The rumor is based on a listing on the Valve website for a Linux programmer.

specifically, a Linux programmer to convert Windows programs to Linux

That's what they advertised for.
