I'm aware that there is (was) another GNOME disk formatting tool in the works but the current version doesn't work for me and also lacks the ability- like gparted and other libparted based apps- to label a drive/partition.

If you thought gparted was overkill and using mkdosfs and working out the device and command for your drive was too much hassle just to format a pen drive (or try to explain to someone how to do it!) then I think you'll want to try this great little zenity script that makes formatting FAT16/32 drives very simple - zenformat
