Okay, why do I feel nostalgia for windows? I feel a yearning to return to 98..... wierd. Although i'm completely content with my ubuntu. I think it's microsoft's mind controls.

I think I know how you feel. A few months ago I had the sudden urge to use something old-looking so I created a Metacity theme based on Windows 2000. Maybe using CDE or something else blocky and simple for awhile will make you feel "well" again.

I know how you feel. M$ looks so ...professional. Just tidy up all the hacks you made to your ubuntu and change your compiz settings

When I first started using Linux, with the CLI, it reminded me of the good-old-days of DOS or VMS.

If you have a disc lying around install it in a virtual machine :)

Hmm.... That may be hard now. Is there a way to save the current state of my panels and settings and then set them back?

Windows for me never felt "professional", except win2K.
Actually I am really sad that I gave my win2K machine away, win2K was painless..

That was one of the most stable systems, I liked NT too. Although I feel that each OS M$ releases gets worse. Vista is just windows CE, ME, and NT, it weighs users down, CEMENT?

I recently installed Windows 98SE to play some old DOS games. It was interesting, at least.

It still is a good OS for its age.

I doubt it seeing how badly all the various theming/compositing/decorating/desktop managing/whatever stuff is integrated - Your best bet would be to find loads of relevant-looking hidden folders in your home directory and crudely back them up.

Just install a distro in virtual box and mess around with that.
I've also had a sudden craving lately to play around with the old system.... lots of nastolga...:)

is downloading a copy of a 18/19 year old operating system with no practical use really stealing. how can microsoft make any money from 3.1 now?

Could it be that perhaps you are subconsciously believing that Win98 might be faster than Turtlebuntu...

Run it in a VM. I find myself playing Atari games all the time. I don't think there's anything wrong with you. Something about Win 98 takes you to a happy place, perfectly normal.

True, but it's still stealing.
So what do you steal, and from whom?
Stealing an apple is different from copying software which is not being sold nor supported.
When you illegally copy software, you steal *ideas* and *work* of the programmers. By copying Windows 3.1, *what* are you stealing since no income is possible from that software?
Do you know that most copyrighted software from the 80s is now being given away by the programmers themselves, and that they even help the community cracking their own protection schemes?
