installation help needed on AMD_64 pc

on my new computer, it isn't installing, not even getting to the actual install part of the process, it gives me a message saying "0.840343 kernel panic- not synchig: vfs: unable to mount root file system"

I have a similar persistent problem on one of my pc's. I will be watching this thread with interest since none of the post I've seen on this problem have been particularly helpful to date and I have not been able to get the system to operate more than 20 minutes without totally freezing.
