Hi Folks

Absolute and utter newbie here.

My wife bought a Emachines laptop D620 two months ago and it has given us nothing but grief running on Vista (I'm a Mac user since 1988 so completely un-used to viruses, pop ups and problems!)

I have downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 i386 and wondered if I can burn this to a CD and load this onto the retched Emachine - wipe off the existing Vista and use this Linux software.

If there is a simple and clear "how to" somewhere please post up a link.

Yours in desperation B!

yes you can, make sure you burn cd as an ISO image then boot from the laptop cdrom, select "try Ubuntu without making changes to your computer" option. When you get to the desktop test all your hardware to make sure it works Ok, like sound/video etc... the only issue with ubuntu may be the wireless.
Post your hardware specs here and you will get better advice

This is the tech spec

* AMD Athlon 64 processor 2650e
* (1.66 GHz)
* Windows Vista® Home Basic
* 1 GB Memory
* 160 GB Hard Drive

By the way abn91c how do I boot from the CD?

Welcome to the forums! This guide will help you create an Ubuntu Live CD: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Trying Ubuntu in Live mode will help you determine if it's right for you and your computer. :) Good luck!

(edit) The Live CD should just boot when you turn on your computer. If not, go into your computer's bios (by pressing one of the Fn keys when you turn it on, depending on the manufacturer) and change the boot order so the CD drive is first.

you may have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS, some pc's tell you to press some key during start-up like F12 on Dells for example. Usual keys are Del, F2, F12 on most computers
then change boot sequence to cdrom first then HDD

I did that and got a message saying something like "No operating system detected".

this was with Unbunt-8.10-desktop-i386.iso burnt onto a dvd.

Hi,

I have the same machine and was thinking of doing the same thing.

Did this all work out? Any issues I should be aware of?

Thanks.
