In another forum I go to, A community project was preposed, it is for all linux users; it concerns petitioning for linux compatible hardware, and native linux software from proprietary software developers. It has been slightly eduited for the Ubuntu forums.

Recently, there has been some excellent exchanges about what's holding Linux back from becoming a mainstream operating system.

Two reasons I often read about are:

(1) Lack of Linux drivers for hardware.
and
(2) Lack of Linux versions of popular software.

In PVDL's excellent "Guide to Linux" book he suggests "writing to a CEO of such companies and explaining that you would like to buy their products but cannot as they do not work with Linux" (p. 14). (That book can be found at amazon.com)

Well, why don't we take this a stage further and make this a community project?

If we as a community can send several thousand letters and e-mails I believe we could bring about change.

I have some ideas how we could do this but before writing more I want to see if anyone else is interested?

All comments welcome.

Sounds like a great idea.

My favorite topic would be "Dial-up modem friendly software".

I'll bet Linux loses as many potential converts who cannot get online, as for any other reason.

Kind regards.

I don't like Linspire much as a distro... but I think it is a good idea to liase with them for this. They are well known outside of the Linux community.
