this has been going on ever since i installed ubuntu. the buttons dissappear and re appear at the top part of the windows. how do i fix this? do i have to disable visual effects?

In the System > Preferrences >Compiz manager > Effects > check the 'Window Decoration' box.

it IS checked though. always has been
