After the most recent upgrade, including some troubles with acroread, half my wallpaper choices disappeared. I want my splash back!
Also, what do I have to do to get any "visual effects"? I've never had them.

Lesterness,
Not sure on the wallpapers... doh!
The best way to get desktop effects is with compiz fusion.
sudo apt-get install simple-ccsm
This is a good way to configure and it should give you the dependencies (ie compiz-fusion).

After you've installed this, you can get the desktop effects going by running System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager.
