I need to ask for some help as I'm an absolute novice at Ubuntu.
I was sure that I did this by loading something that I should not have.
The error I got was
"Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager."
I could not use most of the pulldown menu options becuse of this.
So I completely reloaded Ubuntu from the setup disk and everything worked just fine, then I clicked on the auto update icon and let it apply the updates. When it said to restart I let it. Now the desktop is broken again, with the same error.
If I remember correctly this happened the first time right after an update. But I had been messing with stuff and didn't connect the two.
Many thanks for any help you can give me.
