View Full Version : [ubuntu] XP will not boot after 8.10 install

Trying to set up a dual XP/Ubuntu 8.10 boot. I used the guided partition tool to give the ntfs/ext3 partitions 50% of the HD apiece.
The Ubuntu install goes well and runs perfectly. However, XP will not boot up anymore. It starts to, but a few seconds in the machine reboots and I'm back to the GRUB menu.
What went wrong?

gparted will resize the windows partition.

Are you saying that I should let the guided partition tool pick it's own sizes for things and then resize them after the fact with gparted? How will that fix the problem with GRUB booting the Windows partition?

I'm already using gparted to restore my system after a failed install...

In order to get a clearer picture of your setup, I suggest to boot into Ubuntu and download the Boot Info Script to your desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:


sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what the solution to your booting problem might be.

maybe check you boot disk to see if XP is still there. If not, i would suggest wiping your entire HD and starting from anew and loading XP on and then using Wubi to install ubuntu. that worked best for me.

XP is still there... If I wipe out the ubuntu install, and fixmbr from the XP recovery console it comes back fine.

I'm going to try the boot info script on a fresh install. That looks pretty promising.

Everything seems to be configured correctly. So this seems to be one of the rare cases where Grub is not able to chain load the Windows Boot loader. I recommend to add Ubuntu to the Windows boot loader:


Step 1 Install Grub to the boot sector of the Ubuntu Partition:

Open a terminal in Ubuntu and type:


sudo grub

and at the grub prompt:




root (hd0,4)
setup (hd0,4)
quit

Step 2 Copy the Ubuntu boot sector to a file on your Windows partition:


sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo dd if=/dev/sda5 of=/mnt/ubuntu.bin count=1

(be very careful with the "dd" command. If it runs for more than a couple of seconds press "Ctrl+C" to stop the process)

Step 3 Edit boot.ini:


sudo nano /mnt/boot.ini

(Do not use "gedit" in place of "nano": gedit does not handle "dos" files very well)

Add this to the end of the file (start a new line, but do not leave a blank line):

C:\ubuntu.bin="Ubuntu"

Follow the instructions on the bottom of the screen to save the file.

Step 4 Install a Windows style MBR


sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda ext


Reboot and see whether you can boot into both OS's.


Step 5 Edit menu.lst so that you don't have to go through two boot menus

In an Ubuntu terminal:



gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Change

timeout 10

to

timeout 3

and

#hiddenmenu

to

hiddenmenu.

Save the file and you should be all set.

I followed these instructions and did indeed see the Windows boot manager with Ubuntu as a pick. However, no joy. When I pick Windows I get the same behaviour - it starts to boot, even getting so far as to ask me if I want safe mode or the last good configuration, but then shortly after that - reboot!

Once again, no problem at all getting into ubuntu. If it weren't my wife's machine I'd ditch XP entirely here.

This was really an excellent approach, tho. Don't see why it isn't working... I wonder if there's some BIOS setting or anti-virus stuff that's intended to prevent meddling with the boot config. Seems unlikely.

What exactly did you do the last time to fix Windows? You said you run "fixmbr" and deleted Ubuntu. Anything else? Did you resize the Windows partition?

Anyway I suggest to boot from your Windows CD and run


fixmbr
fixboot

If this did not help,try


chkdsk /r
(also from the Window CD)
