Is it possible to remove a name from a shortcut. I have vague recollections of being able to do this or something similar before but i haven't the foggiest how it is/was done. I've tried the easy things like renaming it " " and stuff but to no avail. any ideas?

I am not sure if I have completely understood your question
but everyfile must have a name
if it has a name of a nonprintable character like space it's still has a name it's just not visible (not printable)
Mind rephrasing your question?

its not that i want to remove the name as such, just have it undisplayed. Ive already tried naming it an undisplayed character but it dosnt appear to have worked

Where is the shortcut? Is it on the desktop, in a folder in nautilus, or in the gnome menu? If it's on the desktop, then you can use the gnome configuration editor (gconf-editor), and navigate to apps>nautilus>preferences and change the desktop font to 0. The only drawback is that it will remove the text from all your desktop icons.
