I am attempting to install 8.10 on an HP Pavilion 7920 desktop that is currently running 5.10. (Don't laugh.) It boots from the CD, asks me for my language choice, and then I try to either install, run from the CD, or test the CD. In all cases, same behavior: black screen with the cursor bar in the upper left corner. Same behavior if I try to boot in safe graphics mode.

I believe that removing the compiz package might solve this problem--if I could ever get into rescue mode. But I can't figure out how to do that. TAB in Grub takes me to a mode that doesn't have a clue what "select root shell prompt" means.

Did you try the alternate CD?

No. Is that on the same download page?

Found it! I'll give that a try.
