View Full Version : [ubuntu] Error 15: File not found. Argh!

polkadotteapot

I went a bit wrong:

Firstly when booting I get a list of linux kernels (none of which boot), then windows versions. I have to go into windows xp, then choose xp or ubuntu like I did before. The partitions are all set and there is data on the ubuntu one so is this booting correctly?

My partitions fo small FAT, ntfs for xp, swap, ext3 for linux.

I wanted the xp/ubuntu choice as before so following the advice on page three of this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 using this
Code:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

I moved the ubuntu and xp to the top of the list above the kernels and I still get the same boot screen, but now I can't boot into ubuntu. I just get a loop of errors sending be back through the process; Error 15: File not found.

I can get to do something to the list so can anyone tell me what I can do to get it changed to either working back to how it was, or how to get it how I want please?

Thank you, argh!

By the way, I don't have an optical drive at the moment so I can't do any of the solutions I've found so far using the live cd.

Just bumping.

meierfra.

Try this: at the grub menu at boot up press "c"

Type

find /boot/grub/stage2

This will return something like "root (hd0,4)". Whatever it says, use in the next line:

root (hd0,4)

Next type

kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 ro
(the number needs to be one higher than the number in "root (hd0,4)". So if you used "root (hd0,0)" above, use "/dev/sda1", if you used "root (hd0,1)" use "/dev/sda2" and so on.

Type

initrd /initrd.img

boot

Hopefully this will boot you into Ubuntu.
If yes, open a terminal in Ubuntu and post the output of

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

Thank you for your reply. Just found that if I go to boot into Windows Xp. then into kubuntu (got it on wubi on my windows partition) and press Esc I can get to the choice of kernels on the ubuntu partition.

'e' brings up similar to what is written above so I didn't change it but it did boot into my ubuntu The wireless is broken now though.

As requested:

I've got the sickboy.kuki kernel installed and all I've done is move ubuntu off wubi to it's own partition. How would that have broken the internet? What have I missed?

Thank you for your help.

Ack, the internet is fine, I was just being a moose (again) and booting into the wrong kernel. So I could just do with a way of tidying up the grubby mess I've made. Pun entirely intended.

Your menu.lst definitely needs some fixing, but i need some more information:

Boot into Ubuntu and download the Boot Info Script to your desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it.

As requested:

EDIT: Sorry, pressed the hash button but it still came out like this I'll try again, it may be noscript.

Boot into Ubuntu and edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst as follows:

Change

# kopt=root=UUID=027829f4-ce52-4e6c-adc2-594544457175 ro ROOTFLAGS=syncio

to

# kopt=root=UUID=027829f4-ce52-4e6c-adc2-594544457175 ro

and change

# groot=()/ubuntu/disks

to

# groot=027829f4-ce52-4e6c-adc2-594544457175

Save the file. Then regenerate menu.lst via

sudo update-grub

You should now be able to boot into Ubuntu directly from the Grub Menu at boot up.
